Raku is about letting go for me. To create pottery in the Raku method I have learned to surrender my expectations and welcome chance and surprise.
The above "Tasha hair pots" are sprayed with ferrick chloride after they have been burnished. Instead of being placed in a fire bin, they are set on a slab and human or fake hairs are strategically placed to make burn marks.
It's a gradual change, what happens to our bodies over the years. And the awareness of these changes can be a brutal reality to all of us vain sisters.
Gravity, excess weight, new lines...it is all part of the aging process. So, looking in the mirror one day and seeing what I thought was a new roll on my side I groaned loudly. On hearing me, my husband asked what was wrong. After i explained my dissatisfaction with my body's current status, my wonderful husband had this to say; "Honey, your weight goes up and down and your body changes all the time. You are still lovely to me."
In my studio that day I was inspired to see the beauty in all women as we age and change.
And so, the women of the Still Lovely series above were born!
